A cleaner who buys clicks pays for every curious visitor. A cleaner on Local Services Ads pays for the lead. Same city, same customer, different way of paying, and the choice can decide whether a month of advertising is profit or a bill.
Short version
Local Services Ads put your name, reviews and a “Google screened” style badge at the top and charge per qualified lead. Search ads give you more control and cost per click. Most home-service businesses should start with Local Services Ads where available and add search ads for services they do not cover.
What these searches cost, from Google
Keyword Planner, US. Prices are Google’s own top-of-page bid estimates for search ads.
| Search | Searches a month (US) | Google est. top-of-page click |
|---|---|---|
| maid service near me | 100K to 1M | about $4 to $17 |
| house cleaning near me | 10K to 100K | about $3 to $16 |
| landscaping near me | 10K to 100K | about $3 to $15 |
| lawn care near me | 10K to 100K | about $3 to $14 |
| artificial turf installation | 1K to 10K | about $3 to $30 |
Those are click prices. In Local Services Ads you are charged per lead instead; Google describes how in its Local Services Ads help and overview page.
How the two actually differ
| Local Services Ads | Google Ads (search) | |
|---|---|---|
| You pay for | a lead (a call or message that meets Google’s rules) | each click |
| Where it shows | top of results, above search ads | below LSA, in the ad block |
| Control | less: categories, areas, hours and budget | more: keywords, pages, schedule, audiences |
| Trust signals | reviews, license or background checks where offered | what your ad and page say |
| Best for | calls from ready-to-hire customers | specific services, offers and seasonal pushes |
Neither one is better in every case. LSA is simple and lead-based; search ads are flexible and need steady management.
What to do first
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile with real photos and service areas.
- Apply for Local Services Ads if your category and city support it, and finish the checks Google asks for.
- Set a weekly budget you can afford and watch the leads for quality (right area, right service).
- Dispute leads that do not qualify; Google has a process for that.
- Add search ads only for services LSA does not cover, such as turf, commercial cleaning contracts or seasonal programs.
The page matters either way
A clean service page with prices as ranges, a short quote form and recent photos turns visitors from search ads into calls. For LSA the profile and reviews matter even more because that is what the customer sees.
Measure the right thing
Count booked jobs and revenue per lead source, not leads alone. Ask on every call how the customer found you and log it.
Frequently asked questions
Are Local Services Ads cheaper than Google Ads?
It depends on your category and city. LSA charges per lead, which can be cheaper if most of your leads convert, but it is not a guarantee. Compare cost per booked job.
Can I run both?
Yes. Many businesses run LSA for core services and search ads for specific offers.
Who needs a website then?
You still do. Many customers click through, and search ads need a landing page.
