Every independent agent has bought a bad lead. You pay $30, the person did not remember filling out a form, and the other four agents who bought the same lead called first. So the real question is not whether leads are good or bad. It is what a bound policy costs you from each source.
Short version
Purchased leads give fast volume but low conversion, so the true cost per policy can be high. Your own search presence is slower but compounds. Track cost per bound policy for each source and decide with your own numbers.
What bought leads cost
Prices depend on the line of business and on whether a lead is shared or exclusive. One guide describes anything from a few dollars to more than $200 per lead (ActiveProspect). Another lists shared leads at $10 to $25 and exclusive leads at $25 to $70 or more (AgencyHeight), and commercial property and casualty leads are quoted at $50 to $300 with conversion often around 2 to 5 percent.
Do the math with your own close rate. At $50 a lead and a 5 percent close rate, a policy costs $1,000 in leads alone, before your time.
What people search before they call an agent
In Google Keyword Planner for the US, “insurance agent near me” is in the 10K to 100K searches a month range, “independent insurance agent near me” and “business insurance quote” in the 1K to 10K range, and “insurance leads” itself in the 1K to 10K range. Google’s estimated top-of-page click runs about $10 to $47 for “insurance agent near me” and about $33 to $95 for “business insurance quote”, so paid search is not cheap either.
Building your own search presence
There is no rigorous independent benchmark for SEO cost per lead for agents, and we will not invent one. What we can say is how it works: a complete Google Business Profile, a page for each line of coverage and each city, honest reviews and a quote form that works on a phone. It takes three to six months to show, but the leads are yours alone, and the clicks are free.
- Maps and reviews bring “near me” searches.
- Coverage pages bring “business insurance quote” type searches.
- Helpful guides bring people at the research stage.
A sensible mix
Some agency guides suggest a hybrid of mostly networking and a smaller amount of purchased leads. Our view: use purchased leads as a short-term test with strict tracking, put steady effort into your own search presence, and add paid search only for the lines where your cost per bound policy is clearly lower.
Licensing and advertising
Agents must follow their regulator’s rules on license numbers, disclosures and testimonials. See the California Department of Insurance and have your compliance team review ads before launch. We never promise savings or approval.
