One click on “personal injury lawyer near me” can cost more than a nice dinner. Google’s own estimate for the top spot runs from about $66 to $340. If your firm buys those clicks without a plan, the budget disappears before the phone rings.
Short version
Legal is among the most expensive advertising on Google, and the price varies hugely by case type. The answer is not to avoid ads but to build map and search strength first, price each case type separately and track every call to a signed case.
The numbers, from Google itself
These are top-of-page bid estimates from Google Keyword Planner for the US, with monthly search volume in ranges. They are not your price, but they show how different practice areas are.
| Search | Searches a month (US) | Google est. top-of-page click |
|---|---|---|
| personal injury lawyer near me | 100K to 1M | $66 to $340 |
| car accident lawyer near me | 100K to 1M | $95 to $414 |
| dui lawyer near me | 10K to 100K | $8 to $102 |
| criminal defense attorney near me | 10K to 100K | $4 to $66 |
| divorce lawyer near me | 10K to 100K | $4 to $31 |
| immigration lawyer near me | 10K to 100K | $5 to $22 |
| estate planning attorney near me | 10K to 100K | $2 to $14 |
Other published figures vary because they measure different things. The Media Captain reports a $19.44 average across its personal injury clients, which includes cheap brand-name clicks, and a range from about $4 for medical malpractice to $90 for auto accidents (The Media Captain). Webtonic cites $75 to $200 or more for competitive personal injury terms (Webtonic). Same market, different definitions.
Why legal clicks cost so much
A signed personal injury case can be worth tens of thousands of dollars to a firm, so firms bid aggressively. Terms that include a city, a case type and the word “lawyer” signal strong intent, so they cost more than general questions.
The cost per lead is higher still. Webtonic reports an average of about $442 per personal injury lead from Google Ads, and cost per signed case is higher than that.
What a smaller firm can do instead
- Build the free positions first: a complete Google Business Profile, a page for each practice area and city, and honest reviews. This is slower, but it lowers how much every later click has to carry.
- Price each practice area separately. Divorce, estate planning and immigration clicks cost a fraction of personal injury, so they often make better sense for a smaller budget.
- Track calls to signed cases, not clicks. Ask your intake team to tag each call by source.
- Answer fast. A call that goes to voicemail is a click you paid for twice.
- Block the wrong searches with negative keywords: students, jobs, free forms.
Advertising rules
Lawyer advertising is regulated, and a careless ad costs more than a bad month. In California see the State Bar Rules of Professional Conduct and have your own counsel review ads, testimonials and disclaimers.
